This story reminded me of something I learned in school -- but shouldn't have, since it didn't have any of the characteristics you describe in your book. My biology teacher in ninth grade made a habit of chanting the following, while hitting the top of his desk with his yardstick: "No organism -- bam! -- can survive -- bam! -- in an environment -- bam! -- of its own waste -- bam!" I don't know how often he did this, but it was frequent enough that the yardstick broke mid-chant toward the end of the year. The chant wasn't tied into our studies, either, though it was clear he wanted us to remember it. Boy, do I ever.
