As a former journalist, I would point out that reporters have to learn as they go along as well. Even specialized reporters. We're often a mile wide and an inch deep. Only in the past few days have we heard more and more about why the bailout is important to the average Joe. Much more useful than reporting that politicians are forecasting doom. Reporters need that understanding before THEY can get their messages across, especially when it's a brand new issue.

Read Karl Weick's 1996 "Sensemaking in Organizations" for an explanation (!) of why this works.

Explanation before information matches my experience as well.

In this case does explanation create some of the same dynamics that of telling an opening story when giving a speech/presentation?

The story provides a way for the listener to move from comprehending the meaning of the speaker to assigning personal significance to the material and its meaning.

Just thinking out loud.

Thanks for the post and your insights.

Keep creating...a story worth repeating,
Mike

I like the metaphor of the framing for a house to explain how people acquire and retain information. You have to pour the foundation and then frame up the outlines and the roof with 2x4s. You can't do the plumbing and wiring until you have the frame done. When those are done, you can hang the sheetrock and do the finishing. What Rosen describes is very much like that, I think.
